Here at EU Jacksonville, we want to spread the word about everything tasty here on the First Coast. We’ve talked to some of our area’s chefs about what they think you should order at their restaurants this season and why. By Erin Thursby, EU Food Editor & Executive Director of GastroJax Restaurant Orsay has been one of the standard-setters in Jacksonville for upscale cuisine for some years now, and if you’re looking to impress, it should be on your shortlist. The base here is French, but with American Southern influences and a modern take, so you’ll find international flavors …

Welcome back behind the stick. This month we’re talking all things negroni. Are you familiar with the negroni cocktail, friends? With only three ingredients, it’s easy to make and hard to mess up. The negroni is comprised of gin, Campari, and sweet vermouth. The most classic ratio is equal parts of all three ingredients, but bartenders will vary the proportions based on individual taste. I prefer a less sweet combination and tend to add a touch more gin and Campari and a bit less sweet vermouth. In 1947, Orson Welles described the negroni as such: “The bitters are excellent for …

South Kitchen + Spirits is a brand-new restaurant at 3638 Park St in , opened by . Brian was super influential in my entrance into the Jacksonville food scene. Two years ago when he was at he helped me plan my first food event. It was a fundraiser brunch for about 40 people, and we used most of the proceeds to host a multi-course dinner for my culinary school class at Orsay. (On a side note, that was the first time I tried popcorn ice cream, and I remember it like it was yesterday.) Brian didn’t go to culinary school. …

Dish Update, Feature, Food + Drink
Bonjour, y’all! has rolled out some new delights this season. Their food, if you haven’t guessed from the greeting I’ve stolen from their press materials, is a fusion of down home Southern American and French. We got a taste at their media dinner. Starters include a well-presented and delicious beef tenderloin tartare, buffalo chicken croquettes for those who like it hot. In salads they’ve got a pretty little wedge, and gruyere for their rich French onion soup. On their brunch menu, don’t miss their version of shrimp & grits. Meat eaters can go for their lush short rib pot-au-feu, while …

The experience of having a beer, a glass of wine, or a cocktail with one’s meal is a time-honored tradition that I totally support. It’s easy to say that support for this tradition runs high, considering the plethora of restaurant bar options that are available in our fair metropolis. It goes without saying that some restaurants have better bars than others, and that sometimes a particular place will be better for satisfying a specific craving than others. For the sake of brevity, these four restaurants provide a good mix of tasty food and delightful libations that make them some of …

Drink, Food + Drink, Restaurants
by JENNIFER EARNEST AND CHRISTOPHER IRVIN Just like in the world of fashion, food trends come and go. Some, like the shoulder pads of the 80s, have gratefully come and gone. When it comes to food, some trends go beyond being just “trendy.” These so-called trends actually develop and expand the fabric of our food scene into something better. The thing with trends is that they are all relative to whom you talk to– some people still dig shoulder pads, just as some people still believe vegans only eat salad. So, for the purpose of this article, we reached out to local …
