Enriched with culture, history and entertainment, Northeast Florida has endless opportunities for families to bond this summer through education, laughter and discussion.
As an upcoming high school senior, I have endured the struggle of anticipating Aug. 1, the opening of Common App. The college preparation process, studying for standardized testing, refining my resume and attending college tours have all served to encompass my thoughts for the past few months. Despite being on summer vacation, I, like many high school students, find myself researching college regularly. While it’s important to explore the possibilities, spending my last year of high school with friends/family should take the lead. Summer vacation is a time to create memories and appreciate life in the moment.
This summer season doesn’t necessarily require excessive expenditures, though, if you know where to look.
To kick off summer vacation, families can gather for a picnic. All the necessary preparation for this summer endeavor only takes light packing: a basket filled to the brim with mouthwatering fruits, neatly cut sandwiches, an assortment of cheeses and chocolate desserts all paired with a quilt or blanket. Now families have the perfect day for shared laughs and communication. Picnics are the ideal moment to soak up the sun and engage in meaningful conversations with those in your presence.
After lunch, the family can enjoy the benefits of living directly on the East Coast, our beaches. Siblings will connect by creating sand castles or splashing around in the ocean. This will not only result in a lengthy slumber due to the summer’s heat but will establish memories that families may reminisce about and share with others for years to come. Moreover, watching the sun disappear into the horizon and appreciating the beauty of a sunset while bonding with family doesn’t cost a thing. Finishing the night off with some soft serve ice cream, and this day will be one the family won’t forget.
Additionally, families can connect this summer vacation by vibing to live music. The Colonial Oak Music Park, tucked away off St. George Street in St. Augustine, is a remarkable venue that hosts free concerts every week. Set in the heart of historic Downtown, Colonial Oak allows families to learn about the land’s history and absorb its ambiance. This family-friendly spot includes several seating options including a front area for dancing or games for a night of entertainment for the entire family.
Finally, on the first Wednesday of every month, Downtown Vision presents Art Walk, a free, family-friendly event from 5-9 p.m. Here, families may embrace the work of local artists of all kinds. James Weldon Johnson Park hosts food trucks, art vendors and live music, while attendees are encouraged to take a self-guided tour to explore the diverse galleries and see live street performances.
These are simply a few examples of hundreds of opportunities for family time this summer vacation. The activity doesn’t have to be expensive, as long as it allows families to spend quality time together, sharing with each other and forming tight-knit connections.
