HARPETH RISING

Harpeth Rising1Members of Harpeth Rising are Jordana Greenberg (violin), Rebecca Reed-Lunn (banjo), and Maria Di Meglio (cello). Maria Di MeglioTheir songs depict wanderlust, eternal curiosity, class struggle and extraordinary love. The group’s harmonies run the gamut from traditional Bluegrass to full on Gregorian organum. The members met while earning performance degrees at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and despite their diverse beginnings (hailing from vastly different cultures and geographic areas), found in each other a unified musical idea and a brand new one at that.

Q: How was the name Harpeth Rising chosen?

A: We spent our first few years as a band in the Nashville, Tennessee area, where the Harpeth River runs. It is a small — but powerful — river, and we liked the idea of naming ourselves after something as dynamic and lively as water.

Q: What is your current favorite song performed by the band?

A: We are about to release a new album, Shifted, and the title track from that album is one that we love to perform.

Q: Ever played in St. Augustine, Florida?

A: We have played throughout Florida, but this will be the first time in St. Augustine. We’ve visited, though — walked through the historic downtown, and ridden the train to see the Christmas lights!

Q: Who are your musical influences?

A: Our influences span centuries and genres! We are inspired by everything from Baroque and Romantic era; classical music to American roots, British invasion, and rock ‘n roll. We also listen to a lot of singer/songwriters. Some contemporary musicians we love are Mary Gauthier, Sam Bush, The Hot Club of Cowtown, John Prine, Todd Snider, Emmylou Harris, Quartet San Francisco, Le Vent du Nord .. the list could go on and on!

Q: Favorite part of performing music?

A: The powerful connection with the audience, which is different from any kind of verbal communication.

Q: Where do you see band in 5 years?

A: We hope we’ll still be performing and traveling full time, just for more and more people!
