Were you hoping to take a cruise this summer but for some reason just didn’t get around to booking it? No need for continued disappointment. You can take a three-hour “cruise” with the Alhambra Theatre, which we have officially dubbed the SS Alhambra for the next four weeks. You will be entertained by a top-notch cast led by actress Loretta Swit, who won two Emmy Awards for her role as the most famous nurse in television history: Major Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in the long-running M*A*S*H series.
This Mark Miller comedy/farce takes place on a cruise ship headed for the Virgin Islands, and concerns the very zany love life of two couples who will at first very much remind you of Noel Coward’s Private Lives, but only for a few minutes, as Playwright Miller and Director Tod Booth add some interesting and very humorous twists and turns in the wooing and wedding of an older woman and a younger man and an older man and a younger woman. We’d like to tell you more but that would spoil your fun and the surprises that happen on board this ship.
The show is a bit slow for the first fifteen minutes as the couples get to know one another, but by the middle of Act I, it becomes a well-acted laugh riot right through to the surprise ending.
To prepare for this show, we watched the complete first season of M*A*S*H checked out from the local library. We are pleased to announce that Ms. Swit has fully incorporated the wonderful wit and comic timing she was known for on the TV series into her character of Madelyn.
