Ride Down(town) to HADESTOWN for a Helluva Show

Words by Cessy Newmon What a way to go to hell and back.  The first of Anaïs Mitchell’s stage endeavors, HADESTOWN intertwines two tales from Greek mythology:  Hades & Persephone and Orpheus & Eurydice.  It’s a very different approach to a tragic end to the love between two young adults versus the often-done Shakespearian Romeo and Juliet.  And Virgil’s Orpheus precedes Romeo by about 1500 years. HADESTOWN is unique from the opening.  One can’t really pinpoint a location, although the sense is that it is a tavern-style setting.  Although Ms. Mitchell is considered an Indie folk singer/songwriter, much of the …

“Nothing beats a failure but a try” Dr. Shaun Powell and the Ritz Writers

Words by Mallory Pace   “Nothing beats a failure but a try,” echoed the words of Shaun Powell throughout the lobby of the Ritz Theatre and Museum. She had just finished giving me a grand tour of the intricate museum halls, backstage, VIP areas and all, providing historical and detailed information about each sector as we walked.    “What’s funny is,” Powell said over her shoulder, “I don’t even work here! I just kept showing up until they gave me a desk.”    Powell earned her doctorate from St. Thomas Christian University in Christian counseling, but one of her passions …

Bittersweetly put ON THE MARKET at Theatre Jacksonville

Many of us have a friend or family member who has gone through the loss of a loved one, leaving a hole that no one knows if it can be refilled.  Realtor Charlotte (Grace Bryan) is almost 2.5 years past the loss of her husband, and her colleagues are urging her to to put herself ON THE MARKET.  A daunting task, since she’s been off the market for over 20 years.  So her colleague, Diane (Marti Schmidt), puts a profile online for her and sets her up unwittingly. Little do they know, colleague Frank (Jordan Born) has had a crush …

If you are looking for high-energy fun, the Alhambra is opening their 2024 with MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. December 4, 1956, at Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, Carl Perkins came in to record some new material with his brothers Clayton and Jay and by drummer W.S. Holland.  Sam Phillips, Sun Records owner, wanted to enhance Perkins’ rockabilly instrumentation and brought in relative unknown Jerry Lee Lewis to play piano.  In the early afternoon, 21-year-old Elvis Presley, a former Sun artist who’s contract had been sold to RCA, arrived to pay a casual visit with his girlfriend.  The ensuing jam session, …

The Rhythm is Gonna Get You ON YOUR FEET! with the FSCJ Artist Series

Not all of the FSCJ Artist Series shows span multiple show dates.  There is a large sampling of entertainment, spanning youth, adult, and family targets.  Some are biographical in nature, such as ON YOUR FEET! THE BOOK OF MORMON rings in a new season for the FSCJ Artist Series

We’ve all had one come to our door at some point – the polite, prim and proper young person who rings the doorbell and asks for a moment of your time to tell you about being Mormon.  But leave it to Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone to take that moment in your life and transform it into one of the most hilarious opening numbers I’ve ever witnessed! THE BOOK OF MORMON, while heavily referencing the Mormon religion, is not in-your-face religion.  If anything, it pokes a lot of fun at the practice of sending naive individuals into the …
