LET'S MURDER MARSHA

by DICK KEREKES & LEISLA SANSOM Orange Park Community Theatre (OPCT) opened its first show of 2012 with the North Florida premier of Monk Ferris’s comedy thriller “Lets Murder Marsha” in its North Florida premier. If the name Monk Ferris does not ring any bells, it is because playwright Jack Sharkey only wrote four plays under that name, while he wrote over eighty under his real name. Sharkey’s farce stage thrillers have been very popular with dinner and community theatres. “Let’s Murder Marsha” is set in a plush Manhattan apartment designed by Director Stan Mesnick. Among other touches, it features …

The plot is based on the 1995 bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire titled, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Maguire’s story is a prequel to L. Call 249-0289 for reservations. This outstanding musical review is an opportunity for theatregoers to step into a time machine and be transported back to the big band scene of Las Vegas in the 1950s. Singer/trumpeter Louis Prima and his vocalist wife Keely Smith were all the rage in the Vegas nightclub world, along with musical greats Frank Sinatra and Dean …

THE EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES

by DICK KEREKES & LEISLA SANSOM Jacksonville’s newest theatre company opened the second play in its short history, with a run of three performances of Jeff Goode’s “The Eight: Reindeer Monologues.” Their first production was the very successful collaboration with the Jacksonville Public Library of “Fahrenheit 451,” which played to a full house and critical acclaim. The 5 & Dime promises to be a nomadic group since they have no permanent home. They hope to bring their craft to diverse locations; in keeping with that goal, “Reindeer Monologues” certainly had a unique setting. All performances were held at the CoRK …

DUGOUT THERAPY

by DICK KEREKES & LEISLA SANSOM OPCT presented an original production of Jennifer Latka’s “Dugout Therapy” on stage December 9, 10, and 11. The production was not part of the regular season but rather one of three fundraising projects for building a new deck and handicapped accessible ramps. Director Vicki Lowe wears several volunteer hats for OPCT, including Chairman of Fund Raising. To make the event possible, she teamed up with playwright Latka who wanted to mount a production of her new play. This opportunity came up rather suddenly and as a result, the cast of eight had only five …

TRU

by DICK KEREKES & LEISLA SANSOM Players by the Sea in Jacksonville Beach offers theatergoers a rare opportunity to experience the Florida premier of Jay Presson Allen’s Tru. The production is a look into the life of literary genius Truman Capote, American author of novels, stories, and screenplays. His best-known works include Breakfast at Tiffanys (1958) and In Cold Blood (1966). Capote died in 1984, and your knowledge of this once flamboyant favorite of the glittering world of high society may have faded, and for theatergoers under forty, may not even exist. Dual Critics recommends visiting www.playersbythesea.org and clicking on …
