Words By Tysen Romeo On May 2022, “Indecent” was approved as Douglas Anderson School of the Arts’ spring theatrical production. Auditions were held in December 2022 and roles were cast before winter break started. The show was set to open in March, but on Jan. 5, the first day of rehearsals, the production was canceled. “Indecent” is a Tony Award-winning play about the controversy surrounding “The God of Vengeance,“ written by Sholem Asch in 1918 which tells the story about breaking through social barriers and the consequences that follow. “Indecent” was written by Paula Vogel and premiered at …

Looking for Valentine’s options? Girls’ night out? PRETTY WOMAN THE MUSICAL based on the 1990 highest-grossing RomCom for a decade – and the one that launched the career of a young Julia Roberts – opens in Jacksonville on 2/15. The musical ran on Broadway until Covid brought it to an early close. This company (with some shifts) has been on tour since September 2021. The story is based on the classic Pygmalion (which originates in Ovid’s Metamorphoses written over 2000 years ago). Edward, a successful businessman, hires Vivian, a free-spirited prostitute, to be his escort to several functions over the …

Words and Interview by Rob Nicholson “There’s a young lady [Vanessa Collier] came onstage with me, I forget where I was, but she’s playing an alto saxophone, and man, she was amazing.” Those are the words of Buddy Guy in an issue of “American Blues Scene,” describing an impromptu performance with Vanessa Collier on the Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise. If you haven’t been fortunate enough to see Collier perform and witness one of her head-turning, fiery and passionate performances, you should definitely make sure you do. She’s playing live in Jacksonville Beach on Feb. 11 at the Blue Jay …

Best Local Musician: Vince Jones Upon hearing the name Vince Jones, I immediately thought of a rockstar or someone I had to have known. It turns out, I wasn’t too far off: Jones is a part of the local band Blistur (which has won “Best Original Band” and “Best Cover Band” for three years in a row). And as Blistur’s newest band member, it’s Jones’ turn to shine. Born and raised in upstate New York, Jones has been surrounded by music all his life, specifically his mother (a singer and keyboard player) and sister (a singer and bass player). And …

Fun Facets: Aladdin is one story from The Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern and Indian folk tales. However, it did not appear in the original Arabic text. It was added by a French translator, who compiled 12 volumes of stories in the 1700’s. The original story is also set in China, and Aladdin is a lazy boy living with mom, not an orphaned street urchin. It’s hard not to compare this version of Aladdin with the 1992 animated film and the more recent 2019 live-action movie. The animated version is fantastical, light, and one can only …
