Blackfish – movie review

by Lana Beads When I fell upon an advance screening of the movie Blackfish I really wasn’t sure what I was getting into. As you watch the film, through the stories of past trainers and orca experts you get a glimpse into the complex mind of the killer whale. How can we really know what they are thinking? Little did we know, growing up going to sea-parks, we have been fed all sorts of misinformed facts about these actually, not-so-gentle creatures. Admittedly, I’ve always had my suspicions about theme parks who parade giant animals on display for sometime now, but …

Disney's Planes movie review

by Richard David Smith III As a 3-D animated movie intended for an audience of children, Disney Planes doesn’t give a movie critic much with which to work. Right off the top, I can tell you that Planes is not as deeply reflective of society as Wall-E nor nearly as emotional as Up…but these are things that adult critics with too much time on their hands worry about, not kids and parents. However, you might be surprised to learn that Planes, at least as far as plot goes, is actually nothing like its four-wheeled automotive predecessor, Disney’s Cars. In Cars, …

DRIFT movie review

by D. Otoni DRIFT movie review Ever get stoked riding waves on Jacksonville Beach? The thrill of feeling a surging mass of water beneath your feet is one that you’ll long remember. There have been plenty of surf movies over the years. Most have been quasi-documentaries like Endless Summer, Fantastic Plastic Machine, In God’s Hand have and have chronicled wave fever and shown places most of us can’t find on a world globe, let alone ever get to surf there. Every once in a while a filmmaker has the moxey to mix in a good story line for your viewing …

STRANDED movie review

by Richard David Smith III As actors go, Christian Slater is like a quantum physics particle. From cult classics like “Heathers” and “True Romance” to disturbing films like “Very Bad Things” to delightful appearances in TV shows like “My Name is Earl,” you never know exactly where the Jack Nicholson School of Acting disciple is going to pop up next. “Stranded” finds Slater barking orders as Col. Gerard Brauchman, the commander of the moon base ARK, a four-person mineral expedition being conducted on the lunar surface from within a bio-dome structure that is under siege from an oncoming meteor shower. …

R.I.P.D. movie review

by Richard David Smith III I must confess, R.I.P.D. had me at “Steely Dan.” Let me explain. You see, Steely Dan is the music of choice in the offices of R.I.P.D. (Rest In Peace Department) because it, “seems to calm people down,” according to the head of the department, Proctor (played to stoic perfection by Mary-Louise Parker). Being a lifelong fan of Steely Dan, I appreciate any nod to the great Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. I also know that they are one of the stingiest bands in existence when it comes to their copywritten material (they once charged a …
