Explore Our Roots with Ranky Tanky, Bringing Gullah Music to the Ritz Theatre and Museum

It’s been a whirlwind year for Ranky Tanky. Named for the Gullah phrase meaning to “get funky,” the rising stars of the low country released its debut album in October 2017 in homage to the Gullah culture of the region. Just two months later, they were topping jazz charts and touring the country. Getting to Know Fernandina Flavor: Amelia Island Culinary Academy

Amelia Island Culinary Tour

Getting to know an area is as much about the local food as it is about the history and landmarks. That’s a concept that the Amelia Island Culinary Academy thoroughly embraces. Before his market tour class arrives,  has already been to the Farmers Market on Center Street in Fernandina Island. It’s just five blocks from the , which is tucked down the same side street as 29 South and the Mermaid Bar/Florida House Inn.   This month I sat down with the head distiller at Fernandina distillery Marlin and Barrel, Wyatt Griesemer, to talk about the history of the distillery and where it’s headed in the future. Previously a bartender with Restaurant Orsay, Griesemer has been working at Marlin and Barrel for over a year now. The distillery itself is fairly new, having only celebrated their two-year anniversary in March. He says that there are currently four full-time employees and that the basic practice is, “making booze in back, selling it in front.” It is a philosophy that seems to work out pretty well …

Marsha Dean Phelts, American Beach

The tranquil American Beach breeze blows into Marsha Dean Phelts’ front lawn. It rattles the blue bottles stacked along a palm tree.
