Who We Saw, What We Thought

Words by Briana Pereira   EASY HONEY AT JACK RABBITS LIVE    Easy Honey, a Charleston-based band, took the stage at Jack Rabbits Live recently, alongside bands Happy Landing and Rohna. Easy Honey entered the stage immediately bringing some quirkiness to the venue with one of their members taking the stage barefoot and another rocking suspenders. Very 2010 hipster, if you ask me.    Their music is the perfect fusion of surf rock and indie pop with a unique sound that captures the spirit of coastal living. As I listened to their set, the beats and lyrics from their songs …

MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET Rocks the ALHAMBRA Season Opening

If you are looking for high-energy fun, the Alhambra is opening their 2024 with MILLION DOLLAR QUARTET. December 4, 1956, at Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee, Carl Perkins came in to record some new material with his brothers Clayton and Jay and by drummer W.S. Holland.  Sam Phillips, Sun Records owner, wanted to enhance Perkins’ rockabilly instrumentation and brought in relative unknown Jerry Lee Lewis to play piano.  In the early afternoon, 21-year-old Elvis Presley, a former Sun artist who’s contract had been sold to RCA, arrived to pay a casual visit with his girlfriend.  The ensuing jam session, …

Southern Sounds: Stephen Carey Q&A

Words by Carson Rich How did you get started playing music?   I got my first guitar for my 11th birthday, and within about a year, I was playing along with Green Day and Blink-182 songs. Girls were impressed by this so I stuck with it. My parents have been supportive from day one and always let me choose music over everything. Music is a community and having been a part of it the majority of my life, I’ve learned everything I know from trial, error, and collaboration within that community.    What inspired you to write country music …

Edge Control: The Project Everyone Needs to Hear

Words by Amiyah Golden As a huge proponent of the arts in this city, I find myself frequenting many local showcases, bars and album releases — wherever art resides I follow — and it’s always a treat to experience some of the purest forms of talent … especially when it’s by accident.    Anyone can sing, anyone can write, and anyone can produce. But not everyone can perform and own the stage like local artist, Ebonique.    I remember visiting the monthly installment of the former talent showcase, The Potluck, that highlighted numerous local artists. With each performer bringing …

West’s 10-year-old daughter, North, was also present and excitedly shared the song she is featured on that comes with the catchy hook, “It’s Your Bestie, Ms. Westie,” that’s been going viral all over social media.   The album spans beyond the traditional sounds that West …

Harmony in Diversity: Mandalla’s Multicultural Melodies

Words by Ambar Ramirez   When I first moved to Jacksonville I noticed that there wasn’t a big Hispanic culture here. Granted, I wasn’t looking for one, but coming from Miami where Spanish seemed to be everyone’s first language, I had whatever the opposite of a culture shock is. It wasn’t until I went to Lynch’s Irish Pub in Jacksonville Beach and saw Mandalla perform that I realized maybe I had it all wrong.    Some people perform music, some people make music, but Mandalla, a local four-piece band that seamlessly weaves top hits with hints of Latin flavor, becomes …

The Rhythm is Gonna Get You ON YOUR FEET! with the FSCJ Artist Series

Not all of the FSCJ Artist Series shows span multiple show dates.  There is a large sampling of entertainment, spanning youth, adult, and family targets.  Some are biographical in nature, such as ON YOUR FEET! The story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan. By the time you read this post, this show will already be out of Jacksonville.  However, if you get the chance to see the touring company, it’s a high-energy, feel-good show that takes you on a journey from humble beginnings to superstardom.  There’s tenderness, love, rejection, acceptance, heartbreak and hope – a gamut of emotion in music and …

THE BOOK OF MORMON rings in a new season for the FSCJ Artist Series

We’ve all had one come to our door at some point – the polite, prim and proper young person who rings the doorbell and asks for a moment of your time to tell you about being Mormon.  But leave it to Trey Parker, Robert Lopez and Matt Stone to take that moment in your life and transform it into one of the most hilarious opening numbers I’ve ever witnessed! THE BOOK OF MORMON, while heavily referencing the Mormon religion, is not in-your-face religion.  If anything, it pokes a lot of fun at the practice of sending naive individuals into the …
