Adios! DIABLO SEZ – July 2016

The Elbow, Burro Bar, Downtown Vision, DVI, Jacksonville, FF

For the past eight years I’ve observed, reported on, participated in, facilitated, and otherwise dedicated a considerably decent part of my life to supporting here in Jacksonville. It started , , , , and . I’ve been in at least six bands that I can recall, some you’ve never heard of, some I’m quite proud of, and most importantly, I started a venue downtown with some friends that I booked and promoted for the first few years. By the time you are reading this, will have held its final show, which may or may not be the last I ever …

DIABLO ‘SEZ – June tunes

Diablo Sez

Jun 12 – Tim Sparks at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum If ever you have an opportunity to catch a show at the Karpeles, you seize it. Jacksonville’s best-kept secret is a seemingly out-of-place mansion in Historic Springfield. It’s the kind of place many drive by and casually wonder about before wiping it from their memory as the day wears on. If it seems odd that Jacksonville is home to a library/museum that contains a massive amount of original documents, you may be even more surprised to learn that there are 10 such museums comprising the largest collection of its kind, …

DIABLO SEZ – May 2016

May 6-7 – Funk Fest featuring LL Cool J, 8 Ball & MJG, Master P, Dru Hill and Z-Trip at Metropolitan Park While this may very well be the most inappropriately named festival in human history, its lineup is taking me all the way back to 8th grade. In fact, after revisiting Master P’s groundbreaking hit, ‘Make Em Say Ugh,’ I was taken on one hell of a flashback to dropped pickup trucks with as much bass and speaker power as $5.15 an hour could afford. Back to the good ol’ days when beats were written with massive bass in mind. …

Check in every month for album reviews, show recommendations, and local music news.   Jun 7 – Third Eye Blind, Dashboard Confessional at St. Augustine Amphitheatre Hello high school version of Jack, would you like to see all that made the early 2000’s either really great or complete crap depending on your perspective? Heck yes I would. Over the past few years I’ve witnessed more than a handful ironic renditions of Jumper during nearly every karaoke session I’ve participated in. I don’t even know …

Showcases, Fangs & Rockville: DIABLO SEZ – April 2015

April 11 – Warehouse Records One Spark Showcase @ Burro Bar Three years running, the annual Warehouse Showcase at Burro Bar has got to be a local institution. The bootstrapped recording studio has in some way, shape or form helped out nearly every band in Jacksonville’s urban core for years and years. This year’s showcase highlights some new-ish names on the bill such as Mr. Miyagi, Chris Pringle, The Good Boys, Cloud 9 Vibes, and more, alongside more established names such as Jackie Stranger, The Crowkeepers, Cougar Barrel, and The Dog Apollo. If there’s a night to block off on …

Diablo Sez: Shows to See in January 2015

EU’s Jack Diablo stays on top of the Jacksonville music scene, so you don’t have to! Jan 10 –  ‘Lobos’ Video Premiere w/ Datadiamond at  Jacksonville’s best (only?) all-girl, all-queer, electronic indie trio are celebrating the release of their new single and music video ‘Lobos’ this month. It’s likely to be the music event of the month and sure to set a high standard for the rest of the year. It’s what you come to expect from what amounts to a supergroup of local musicians and girls who do, in fact, rock. The band features Alex E (Wild Life Society, …

Nov 12 Matisyahu, Radical Something at the Florida Theatre I shaved my beard almost all the way off recently and even though people tell me it looks ok, I still miss that old thing. What gives me the most comfort is that I don’t look as ridiculous as does without a beard. Seriously, why? You have a schtick as a Yiddish reggae-rapper guy, and the ONLY thing you have to do …

Upcoming Shows May 10 Froth, The Coogs, Queen Beef at Shanghai Nobby’s I made the regrettable mistake of turning down a booking request for the Growlers a few years ago that I’m still kicking myself for. Suffice it to say: if that bums you out too, Froth is probably the next best thing. They are playing Psych Fest this year after all. The Coogs though are totally awesome! They’ve been around …
