AIR SUPPLY is still flying high

The band comes on, and what sounds like musicians tuning instruments evolves into a cacophony of sound.  Lead guitarist/music director (Aaron McLain), keyboard (Mirko Tessandori), drums (Pavel Valdman), bass guitar (Doug Gild), and two electric cellos (Cassie Olson, Kaitlyn Findlay) swirl notes until Graham Russell joins in to open the show with “Sweet Dreams”.  When Russell Hitchcock joins onstage, be prepared for a bit of a surprise:  He decided to change his entire look.

Air Supply is celebrating 50 years together, and while looks may change, they sound as if they’d just cut the album from which they’re singing.  Russell’s voice is amazing, and he must be doing something right to maintain it.  Graham has that softer voice and takes lead in places, but where he shines is on that guitar.  His ability, especially on a 12-string, is something to behold.

In an era where pop music leans more towards vocals or rap for bridges, hearing the talented instrumentalists each having their moment to shine is very fulfilling.  We were even given a sneak preview of one of their songs from their new album, A Moment in Time, which is scheduled for release in June.  It may draw in even more of the youngest generation, but the audience was already comprised of diverse ages, a tribute to their lasting pull on heartstrings and use in so many movies.

The vibe is as much a tribute to the fans as the artists.  Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock are graciously deferential to and appreciative of their fans, and everyone is encouraged to sing along.  It’s all about love – friends, family, each other – and although they end with, “All Out of Love,” it’s evident they have so much more to give.  It’s worth the experience if you get the chance.
