To PFAS “Forever Chemicals” in our water and landfills, we are appalled by the suspected levels of water and environmental contamination in Jacksonville and surrounding areas. Why isn’t this toxic, cancer-causing pollution issue discussed more? According to government reports and the Environmental Working Group (EWG), Jacksonville’s Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Mayport Naval Station, Camp Blanding Joint Training Center and other locations across the United States are identified as having contaminated drinking water in nearby communities due to PFAS use by the military. Evidently, the government is aware of this and has informed our military, yet bases continue to utilize PFAS in training exercises… Whoa.

To the Empowered Kitchen, founded in 2018 by Chriss Brown and six female entrepreneurs, this organization gives back to the community in various ways. In honor of Women’s History Month, we commend them for actively training and providing mentorship in all aspects of culinary and business education to women interested in the culinary industry. The founders of the nonprofit are committed to elevating women’s voices in Jacksonville. To students at Alice B. Landrum middle school, Zoe Walker and Evie Prediletto, for getting honorable mentions in C-SPAN’S annual StudentCam contest for their documentary “ The Human Genome Project.”  The StudentCam contest has proven to be a great platform for young critical minds across the country to share their voices on issues that are important to them.  We love that two local students stood out among the 3,200 students who participated nationwide.

Facebook Crusaders

Words by Carmen Macri  With great power comes great responsibility — and no one takes that more seriously than the keyboard warriors. Welcome to the digital age, where online vigilantes thrive. You know the type: Facebook detectives and Twitter sleuths (and no, we’re not calling it X) who

The American Dream: Dead or Redefined?

Words by Ambar Ramirez Ah, the ominous success sequence: graduate from college, land a good job, get married, buy a house and have children. The outdated formula that so many once came to America chasing, an idea noticeably recognized by a suburban house encapsulated with a white picket fence.

Mail: One Patriot’s Point of View (My Letter to America)

I am from the “Baby Boomer” generation. I was born and raised in the South, during segregation. I have experienced many changes and evolutions in our once great nation. There were no black students in my schools until my last two years in high school, 1970-71. But thank God, we

Loud, Fast and Lifted: Lifted Riffs

Words by Carmen Macri  “It wasn’t always the dream, you know, I didn’t always want to be a punk or a rockstar, it’s just something that kind of happened through life.”  Jacksonville’s music scene might seem like a thing of the past — if you’re not paying attention.

Words by Kaili Cochran When COVID hit, everything changed. It felt like the world shut down. Businesses ran on limited hours and most people started working remotely. But even five years after the pandemic ended, some changes haven’t gone away.  One of the most significant shifts is the
