The almighty Hot Dog, Frankfurter, Banger, Glizzy, Tube Steak, Coney, Weenie, Frank or what we like to call locally “Wiener” is one of America’s most cherished foods.  Consisting of grilled, steamed or baked sausage usually, it’s served in the slit of a sliced bun and topped with condiments that make it ever so tasty.  Technically known as a sandwich of sorts, although the National Hot Dog Council has declared that a dog is not a sandwich, Merriam Webster on the other hand states it is indeed a sandwich.  All we know is that they are delicious no matter what they are deemed as.

This wonderment of meat trimmings usually made with pork, chicken, turkey or beef all started in the thirteenth century as a part of German culture.  They became popular as a working-class food that were mainly sold via street vendors by the twentieth century here in the United States. Wieners became even more popular over time by way of being served at baseball games in America starting around 1906.

This delectable style of sandwich has continued to evolve and now is even made without meat as vegan varieties are beginning to sweep the nation.

Let’s not forget to mention the condiments that make them even better.  Mustard, relish, ketchup, slaw, onions, chili and cheese to name a few.  The list is endless and in fact our research indicates there are over 1,000 ways to top off a wiener.  In some cultures, they even serve octopus dogs topped with seaweed.  Really, it’s a thing.

In honor of July being National Hot Dog month, knowing Americans are expected to consume more than 150 million wieners during the month, we thought we would give you a few tips on local places that make them tasty.

Here is our TOP 10 list in no particular order:
