Dennis Chan, chef and owner of Blue Bamboo in Jacksonville, Florida, is the South East Region Winner in the 2018 Neighborhood to Nation™ Recipe Contest from General Mills Foodservice. The 4th annual contest called on independent family or “neighborhood” restaurants to submit an original recipe to put their local dishes and local “flavor” in the national spotlight!

Representatives from General Mills will visit the restaurant on Friday, Aug. 24 to showcase Blue Bamboo and celebrate Chan’s award-winning recipe with a special check presentation and celebratory event that the community is invited to attend.

Chan’s recipe for Sunshine State Orange Cake is the South East Region Winner in the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest. The dessert, taking its name from Florida and inspired by the state fruit, includes Gold Medal™ Yellow Cake layers moistened with an orange sauce then stacked between alternating layers of airy pineapple cream cheese icing and crisp baked Pillsbury’s Best™ Puff Pastry Dough for a luscious creamy, crunchy Napoleon-style textured dessert.

As a Regional Winner in the Neighborhood to Nation Recipe Contest, Chan wins $5,000 as well as $1,000 to share with a local charity. He has chosen “Real Men Wear Pink of Jacksonville,” a campaign from the American Cancer Society which rallies men across the country to join the fight against breast cancer. Chan is also in the running for the Grand Prize (to be announced in late August), which includes an additional $25,000 in cash and $5,000 for charity as well as a three-day trip for two to attend the Food Network & Cooking Channel New York City Wine & Food Festival this October.

In the meantime, the Jacksonville community is invited to visit Blue Bamboo on Aug. 24 to celebrate Chef Dennis Chan’s award. Guests will be treated to samples of his award-winning recipe. Chan will be presented with an oversized check. Chan will also present a check to Real Men Wear Pink of Jacksonville.
