PRESENTED BY FSCJ ARTIST SERIES
If you could filter all of the magic of the holiday season through a kaleidoscope, it wouldn’t equal the dazzling display of Cirque Dreams Holidaze. Imagine if penguins could fly, if toy soldiers marched in unison on wires strung at dizzying heights, if angels soared above a landscape of oversized holiday gifts? Cirque Dreams Holidaze is everything you imagined and more.
This season of the traveling wonderland is bigger and better than ever, according to Jill Winters. As the Creative Content Director for the production, Winters travels the world scouting the best performers, acrobats and dancers for the show. She is only one in a select few of professional U.S. judges invited to international juried circus and performing arts festivals.
As the curator of this traveling holiday spectacular, Winters handpicks the top acts from all over the world. “This is the crème of the crop of holiday events,” says Winters. “It keeps getting bigger and better.”
In 2008, the first Holidaze event hit the stage inspired by creator Neil Goldberg’s lifelong collection of holiday ornaments. During the show, all the acts were ornaments that sprang to life. This year as the Cirque Dream Holidaze prepares to celebrate a decade of holiday entertainment, the ornaments that started it all are still there, joined by over 20 acts and 30 performers from over a dozen countries, showcasing an array of gravity-defying feats that are the signature of a Cirque production.
Hear traditional Christmas carols while an aerialist spins overhead. Audiences will experience gingerbread men flipping in mid-air, toy soldiers marching with snowmen on a high wire, icemen and penguins balancing, spinning and soaring through the air to a chorus of holiday favorites and original music. And no holiday production is complete without a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus and a massive, sparkly Christmas tree.
The annual show also features elaborate new sets, over 300 costumes and large scale choreographed musical numbers. Every element of the show is designed to usher in the magic and the wonder of the holiday season from Thanksgiving and Hanukkah to Christmas.
Cirque Dreams Holidaze airs as a made-for-PBS television special and is staged live throughout the country. “There is something for everyone in this show from two to 92,” says Winters. “Everyone will leave the theatre taking something different from it.”
