Musician, anthropologist, and activist Johnny Clegg has spent his life creating savvy music based on the traditions of his home of South Africa, while fostering equality and unity through song. In the ’70s, Clegg’s group Juluka broke down barriers as an integrated band at the height of apartheid, with a sound that blended rock, Celtic, and Zulu elements. In the ’80s, Clegg carried on his progressive and humanist views toward Afropop with the group Savuka. Today, the now-62-year-old Clegg continues as a figurehead of the power of music and activism.
