PIONEERING PAINTER

Kristan Kennedy has been recognized as one of the most forward-thinking painters on the contemporary arts scene. Her exhibit Sunday features new and old works, abstractions free of any narratives, created on raw canvases that she compulsively paints, washes, scrubs, and constantly rebuilds (pictured, K.Y.S.T.C.T.Y., felt drape, bleach, acrylic ink, gesso, porcelain, 2015). Kennedy has shown her works from Brooklyn to Tokyo, and in her role as curator at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art (PICA), she’s commissioned works by likeminded artists, ranging from performance art to music and installations.
