The Propeller Club gives fundraising a new spin with the 5th annual Pirate Party to benefit the Safe Harbor Maritime Academy and Boys Home. The event will be held from 7pm-midnight Nov 7 at CoRK Arts District and features dinner, live entertainment with Mr. Natural, raffles, a silent auction, door prizes, a costume contest, and tarot card reader.

The pirate-themed event is the largest fundraising effort organized by the Propeller Club. In 2014, the club raised nearly $14,000 for Safe Harbor, doubling the amount raised in the previous year. Funds were used to construct and furnish a welcome center for program members and their families.

“We were thrilled to make a significant impact last year,” says 2015-16 club president Virginia Bailey. “We’re looking to grow that even more this year.” This year, plans include infrastructure upgrades that will allow the charity to increase program enrollment from 12 to 22 boys. “We are changing lives here on the riverfront and we’re excited about the opportunity to support twice as many youth,” says academy director Dustin Johnson. “We’re extraordinarily grateful for the support and generosity of the Propeller Club membership.”

Founded in 1984, Safe Harbor is a Christian residential education program using the waterfront as a residential and educational facility for teenage boys. The program offers a unique opportunity for at-risk boys to live aboard vessels and learn seamanship and maritime skills while studying for their high school diploma.

Safe Harbor does not receive public funding and relies on donations to stay afloat. Operational expenses include monthly utilities, computers and related program equipment, uniforms, cleaning supplies, and galley requirements from dishes and serving wear, Publix gift certificates, and non-perishable canned items. Volunteer and donation information is available at www.safeharboracademy.com.

The Propeller Club of Jacksonville is among the largest running active clubs in the nation. Chartered in November 1930, the Propeller Club supports and promotes all aspects of the maritime industry while educating legislators and the public about the value and importance of waterborne commerce. The club’s programs educate the public and elected officials about the importance and necessity of waterborne commerce. Tickets to the 5th annual Pirate Party are available at www.propclubjax.com.
