Ricardo MaldonadoIsaac Brock has always seemed to have a love-hate relationship with Florida, yet he and the rest of Modest Mouse continuously return to the beautiful state to captivate audiences from Jacksonville to Miami. This past Friday, July 17th, the band did just that, returning to the St. Augustine Amphitheatre with an array of old and new tunes, keeping their audience at full attention.
Fighting through the rain, an excited and wet crowd shuffled into the St. Augustine Amphitheatre to grab a few drinks and dry off before the first band began to play.
Jacksonville’s own SUNBEARS! opened the show with an always upbeat, psychedelic love storm that never fails to memorize listeners.
As the sun began to set, fog and mist filled the amphitheater, perpetuating the inescapable swamp-like atmosphere that is Florida. Dawned in all white, Isaac Brock and company hit the stage around a quarter after 8pm to start the show off with “The World At Large.” It did not take long for Brock to comment on wonders of Florida, asking the crowd “Is everyone enjoying the mosquitos? Well, they are on the house tonight. Indulge.”
With such a large catalogue of songs, every show can differ for Modest Mouse depending on what they play. Their set included old fan favorites like “King Rat”, “Broke”, “Float On” and “Custom Concern,” while also playing a host of new tunes off their latest release like “Lampshades on Fire”, “Coyotes” and “The Ground Walks, With Time in a Box.”
After their set, Modest Mouse returned to the stage to finish the show with a four-song encore including the very fitting buzzing guitar sounds of “Fly Trapped in a Jar”, “3rd Planet” and a never-ending version of “The Good Times Are Killing Me,” which most hoped never stopped. Without fail, Modest Mouse continues to prove their endurance throughout the years, providing fans with great music and an even more amazing live show, leaving everyone satisfied.
