POWER DOWN: UNCONSTITUTIONAL CARTOGRAPHY
On Thursday, July 9, the Florida Supreme Court nixed a congressional redistricting map drawn largely by the legislature’s Republicans, ruling that the legislature intentionally drew the map to favor GOP incumbents and disadvantage Democrats. The court ordered the map for as many as 22 districts to be redrawn before the 2016 elections.
But it wasn’t just Republican incumbents who were unhappy with the ruling. Rep. Corrine Brown (D) – whose district was ordered to be redrawn – said the Supreme Court’s decision has the potential to upend the work she has done to earn minorities a voice in the Florida legislature.
“The decision by the Florida Supreme Court is seriously flawed and entirely fails to take into consideration the rights of minority voters,” she said in a statement.
