The Gospel of St. Matthew will receive a rockin’ contemporary spin when Apex Theatre Studio remounts its highly successful production of Godspell, the well loved Off Broadway classic on Friday, July 24th, and Saturday, July 25th, in Taliaferro Hall at St. John’s Cathedral, 256 East Church Street.  Proceeds from the performance will benefit Church Without Walls, a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Florida that reaches across social boundaries to create community, connection and meaning.

An instant hit when it was produced Off Broadway in 1971, Godspell offers a variety of musical styles and theatrical formats to make the Gospel of St. Matthew accessible to today’s audiences. Its much-loved score includes the hits “Day By Day” and “Prepare Ye The Way.”

“We had such a phenomenal response to the production last summer,” commented Ian Mairs, artistic director for the show, “it was the first year of the program so we wanted to keep things low key. But it was clear to us that we needed to provide the artists and the community with more opportunities to experience the show.”

apexpr3Mairs created the Summer Musical Theatre Intensive along with vocal coach Matt Morgan, to provide “a small but mighty group of theater students the opportunity to work at an advanced level of training.”

The cast includes students from Post to Post Links II error: No link found for term slug "Douglas Anderson School of the Arts"and Stanton College Preparatory School. The role of Jesus will be performed by visiting teaching artist Jonathan Moussett, who recently completed a Bachelor of Music at Florida State University in Musical Theatre performance and is known to Jacksonville audiences from appearances at the Alhambra Theatre and Dining.

Apex Theatre Studio’s production of Godspell to benefit Church Without Walls will be performed on Friday, July 24th and 8 p.m. and Saturday, July 25th at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Taliaferro Hall at St. John’s Cathedral.
