Rated PG-13

Directed By: Robert Schwentke (known for RED)

Dark times call for extreme measures.

After the ruin of Abnegation by Jeanine’s partnership with Dauntless, Tris is on the run with Four, Caleb, and Peter. While they are seeking refuge in Amity, the Dauntless faction is searching for an artifact in the wreckage of the Prior home. They find a box that is inscribed with all of the factions and Jeanine believes that it contains a message that will rid her of her Divergent problem. She also deduces that only a Divergent can open the box. Tris is battling demons that have plagued her since she found out that she is divergent and has trouble abiding the Amity rules. Amity’s leader, Johanna, gives her one more chance to remain in their territory but the Dauntless faction arrives to search for Divergents. Peter surrenders and gives up the location of Tris, Four, and Caleb who escape onto a train inhabited by Factionless people. After a scuffle, the Factionless people realize that Four is the man that they have been looking for and Caleb realizes that he cannot continue the journey with Tris and Four. The tension escalates for Tris when she and Four seek refuge in Candor and must take a truth serum in order to escape arrest. Tris learns that she must embrace her divergence at any cost in order to battle those who are against her.

You are worth it.

The Divergent Series: Insurgent picks up where Divergent left off with Tris, Four, Caleb, Peter and Marcus taking refuge from Jeanine in the Amity compound. While the first film introduced the audience to all the factions and characters, Insurgent jumps right into the action with amped up special effects from Director Robert Schwentke. Shailene Woodley masterfully portrays the protagonist Tris. She is much more comfortable handling weapons and being a member of Dauntless than she was in the first film. Theo James is the perfect Four. Unfortunately, we don’t get to know many of the new characters such as Evelyn Eaton played by Naomi Watts and Academy Award Winning Actress Octavia Spencer’s Johanna Reyes. The action adventure runtime is just shy of two hours, but you never notice. The fight scenes are choreographed well and the CGI effects are incredible. Insurgent may have been adapted from Veronica Roth’s Dystopian novel, but it diverged from the novel quite a few times. I want to caution anyone who read to books to not let that influence your enjoyment. Once I got past the differences, I loved the second installment and look forward to the next film in the series.
