The Sandollar and Barz

Near the St. Johns River Ferry dock on Heckscher Drive there is a great bar and package place called Barz. I spoke with Elaine whose parents opened Barz in 1972 and were involved in the Jacksonville liquor business from 1955 until their deaths in 2011. She tends the bar most days, chats with regulars, and welcomes new customers with a smile.

On Sunday, a bloody mary will set you back just $2.50, and you can watch the boats and barges cruise down the river from the comfort of the bar. Whether you want to drink there or grab a bottle for later from the attached package store, Barz is the perfect place to drop by when headed to the beach or waiting for the ferry. I heard that there is even pretty raucous karaoke on occasional Saturday nights. Call (904)251-3330 for more information. Check them out for cold beer and great view!

Just a bit farther north on Heckscher from Barz is the Sandollar restaurant. Recently renovated after a fire, the Sandollar has food, a full bar, and a great view. The Wednesday night seafood buffet is a customer favorite. It’s possible show up by boat and tie up at their dock. The massive deck plays hosts to live music most weekends. Check them out for a great view with a tasty beverage. Call (904)251-2449 or go to www.sandollarresturantjax.com.

The Rise of Non-alcoholic Beverages

Words by Kaili Cochran Since COVID-19, non-alcoholic beverages have become something more commonly seen day-to-day and are only becoming more popular as time goes on. During the recent Super Bowl LIX on Feb. 9, Michelob Ultra Zero made an appearance in “The ULTRA Hustle” ad that aired during

Behind the Bar Confessions

Words by Lorelei Belanger Behind every beer, mixed drink or shot, there’s a story — sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartfelt, often downright bizarre. From managing the madness of a packed night in at the neighborhood bar to dealing with eclectic tourists and customers pushing the limits of politeness, bartenders see
