When we first heard that String Cheese Incident is playing an unprecedented seven sets of their awesome jams in three days to kick off Halloween at the Spirit of Suwannee music park in Live Oak, Florida Oct 31- Nov 2, we were stoked. Then we were told STS9 and Big Gigantic are going to bless us with some high energy late night sets. Added to that, a bunch of other great artists like Emancipator, Conspirator and Steve Kimock and Friends playing through the three days, it can’t get much better. When we heard that artists from all over are transforming the music park into a mystical, magical, spooky experience, we got even more excited. Now we hear that the after hours will include what is billed as “The Spirit Lake Silent Disco”.
I said the same thing. What in the heck is a silent disco? In order to get to the bottom of it, I went to the source, Vladimir Yakovlevich Kulishevskiy, better known all over as the super talented and always busy, Vlad the Inhaler. He has hosted “Crunchay” stages at the last 2 Purple Hatters Balls, The Blackwater Music Festival 2011, The Suwannee Disc Jam #7, The Suwannee Flood Jam, as well as being involved with Bear Creek ’12, and playing Aura Music Festival ’12 silent disco.
As the manager of the Spirit Lake Silent Disco, Vlad gave me the lowdown. “Silent Disco is a music show contained within the headphones. We give out 500 sets of headphones to the crowd, and they will have 2 channels of music to choose from. The music is coming from the two acts performing on stage, broadcasting live through a transmitter. There is lack of bass, but the enveloping nature of the headphones does produce a very fun result.”
So Vlad went on to tell me that the silent disco is going to have 10 acts for two nights at Hulaween. Eliot Lipp, Up Until Now, Sir Charles, Prophet Massive, Jody Litvack, Manic Focus, Thibault, Satoru, Elliot Mess, and Vlad’s brother Leo will be joining him on the violin during his set. I was also told that the Silent Disco stage will be set up by the Cypress Lake area.
So don’t freak out when you see hundreds of people out by the lake dancing wildly, quietly all wearing headphones Friday and Saturday night. It might just be more fun to jump in, grab a set headphones yourself and join in the party.
If you want to listen to some samplings of the DJs that are performing in the Spirit Lake Silent Disco, here are some links. Enjoy.

Avril Lavigne: The Punk Rock Princess

By Teresa Spencer In 2002, a teenage girl from small-town Ontario burst onto the scene with a skateboard under one arm, a tie around her neck, and a snarl that said, I’m not like the other girls. Her name was Avril Lavigne, and Let Go, her multi-platinum debut album, kicked

Nancy Wilson: Still Rocking, Still Writing, Still Raising Hell

By Teresa Spencer In a world where music icons are too often frozen in amber, Nancy Wilson remains in motion writing, playing, evolving. And when you speak with her, it’s clear the Hall of Famer hasn’t just survived rock and roll. She’s still breathing fire into it. At
