Jacksonville Beach’s Players by the Sea held its annual end of the season Pelican Awards ceremony on Saturday August 17, at their theatre. The event is like a local version of the Tony Awards, although, believe us, much funnier than the Tonys.
The Pelicans are several things: a celebration of theatre, a family party for theatre lovers and volunteers, and an acknowledgement by Players of the priceless value of the volunteer hours given throughout all phases of production and support. From acting to backstage tech, concessions, construction, the list goes on and on and our community theatres could not exist without the dedicated work of their volunteers.
The Producers of this event, JOE SCHWARZ , Executive Director and the PBTS Board of Directors, selected RON SHREVE AND JOCELYN GERONIMO as the Directors and Emcees of the show. Both were hilarious and kept things moving efficiently. BRADLEY AKERS and KATHERINE THAMES provided assistance as Stage Managers. A video screen high above center stage announced the nominees, and twelve presenters incorporated a lot of humor in their very creative approaches to passing out the coveted awards.
The audience saw a brief musical preview of “Young Frankenstein”, which opens September 13 and is the first Main Stage production for the coming season.
Incoming President MICHAEL SMITHGALL was introduced; he is taking over the leadership reins from outgoing President HOLLY GUTSHALL whose term expired. Holly’s excellence in this position for the last four years was acknowledged with an Outstanding Service Award plaque.
After the merriment and excitement of the awards ceremony, the enthusiastic theatre folks moved on to eating, their second greatest love outside the stage. Board member CRAIG SMITH filled a gallery table with food from his Alhambra Theater & Dining venue which delighted the appreciative and lively attendees.
Players has an excellent season planned for 2013-2014; check it out at playersbythe sea.org.

Alhambra’s WEST SIDE STORY is anything but Krupke’d!

Alhambra’s current production of WEST SIDE STORY touts one of the best casts I’ve seen on their stage, and it rivals a few of the touring companies I’ve seen recently.  It is a very moving production, and while there is nothing that youngsters cannot see, it is a tragedy, so

PETER PAN, by Sir J.M.
