Alhambra’s Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

The show is done on a stage with massive stone columns and hieroglyphic panels fashioned after those of Karnak. Set and Lighting Designer Jason Coale used set pieces that were moved on and off, like tents and other shelters, a jail cell, and a camel. The special lighting by Mr. Coales added as many colors to the columns as Joseph had in his coat. Everything is bright and brassy in keeping with the theme of the show.

The Costume Crew created the wonderful costumes that ranged from ancient tribal robes for desert dwellers to the Narrator’s brightly colored modern gown.

The songs and score incorporate a wide range of musical styles. Dustin Maxwell as Levi belts out a country “One More Angel in Heaven” with his cowboy-hatted brothers providing harmony. Damian Barray as Judah dons a braided wig and uses a lively Caribbean flavored Calypso number to plead with Joseph for leniency for Benjamin, the youngest brother, played by the adorable Tanisha Moore, who has been (falsely) accused of stealing a golden cup. Roy Johns plays Ruben and leads his brothers in “Those Canaan Days”, with all wearing berets and singing with French accents.

Even Elvis made it into the show. Andrew Connors is the smooth-voiced and pompadoured Pharaoh in a white jumpsuit who imparts his rock and roll description of his dreams to Joseph.

The Dual Critics of EU Jacksonville have been reviewing plays together for the past nine years. Dick Kerekes has been a critic since 1980, starting with The First Coast Entertainer and continuing as the paper morphed into EU Jacksonville. Leisla Sansom wrote reviews from time to time in the early 80s, but was otherwise occupied in the business world. As a writing team, they have attended almost thirty Humana Festivals of New America Plays at Actors Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky, and many of the annual conferences sponsored by the American Theatre Critics Association, which are held in cities throughout the country.

They have reviewed plays in Cincinnati, Chicago, Miami, Sarasota, Minneapolis, Orlando, New York, Philadelphia, Sarasota, San Francisco, Shepherdstown, and The Eugene O’Neill Center in Waterford, Massachusetts. They currently review about one hundred plays annually in the North Florida area theaters, which include community, college, university, and professional productions.
