LaVilla One Act Plays: Upon a Sea of Dreams & Discovering Rogue

LaVilla Discovering Rogue

In the flashbacks that portray different situations that occurred in her life, we met several characters that included Teacher (CADEN BILBREW), her dog Fluffy (ELAN SANDLER), Dad (LIAM WIRSANSKY), Mom (CHRISTINA O’BRIEN), and her boyfriend Roger (JAMES DELEGAL).

A number of students played various cameo roles in several scenes as students, surfers, a beach family, intellectual wanders, partiers, trust fund babies, and cheerleaders; they did a great job of staying in character. Wearing costumes appropriate to the roles were JAOINNI MCGOWAN, AVA RAVELO, HANNA REEVES, NATASHA HARRISON, CEY’WAN HERAH, COURTNEY PEPPARD, CLAIRA BERG, SAMANTHA NELSON, GENESIS RODGERS, ELISE WEINAND, CEANNA BLOOM-LEDEUX and RACHEL CRISTOL.

Abbey Malkewitz’s beach design was convincing and we liked the way she used tan carpets as sand dunes. Set pieces for some of the short scenes were swiftly moved on and off the stage. DeSpain‘s direction kept the action moving with great blocking.

The Dual Critics found the play very interesting, as it was challenging for the actors and thought provoking for the audience members.

The LaVilla theatre program has an active and lively booster organization and the members were very busy at the pre-show and intermission with concessions and tee shirt sales, raising funds so that these talented performers can attend state competitions. We missed last year’s fall musical, but we’re looking forward to being in the audience this year.

The Dual Critics of EU Jacksonville have been reviewing plays together for the past nine years. Dick Kerekes has been a critic since 1980, starting with The First Coast Entertainer and continuing as the paper morphed into EU Jacksonville. Leisla Sansom wrote reviews from time to time in the early 80s, but was otherwise occupied in the business world. As a writing team, they have attended almost thirty Humana Festivals of New America Plays at Actors Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky, and many of the annual conferences sponsored by the American Theatre Critics Association, which are held in cities throughout the country.

They have reviewed plays in Cincinnati, Chicago, Miami, Sarasota, Minneapolis, Orlando, New York, Philadelphia, Sarasota, San Francisco, Shepherdstown, and The Eugene O’Neill Center in Waterford, Massachusetts. They currently review about one hundred plays annually in the North Florida area theaters, which include community, college, university, and professional productions.
