DOUGLAS ANDERSON SCHOOL OF THE ARTS HOSTS 24th ANNUAL EXTRAVAGANZA

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, the Duval County high school for students with a passion for the performing and visual arts, hosts its 24th annual showcase, Extravaganza, at the Moran Theater on Saturday, February 6. The Art Exhibition begins at 6:30 p.m.; the performance at 7:30 p.m.
The showcase features some of the area’s most accomplished high school performers in dance, theater, vocals, instrumental music, film, visual arts and creative writing.
“Extravaganza is the event that highlights the very best of student achievement at Douglas Anderson,” said principal Jackie Cornelius. “When you see our talented artists displaying their talents onstage, you will witness an exhilarating tour de force that truly celebrates the arts and the processes we are teaching at DA.
“Many of these students will pursue studies at the top universities, art institutes and conservatories in the world, and eventually go onto Hollywood and Broadway.”
The 2010 showcase includes Tchaikovsky’s “Dance of the Jesters” performed by the DA Symphony Orchestra; the famous female variation from the ballet La Esmeralda; a rhythmic a cappella vocal piece from Mexico called “Chili Con Carne”; as well as Broadway-style dance and vocal numbers, exciting films, performance poetry, and a visual arts showcase.
Special guest performer this year is jazz saxophonist and DA alumnus, Bob Reynolds, who toured last year with the John Mayer Band. Reynolds’ 2006 release, Can’t Wait For Perfect, was voted “Best Debut Album” in the Village Voice’s Jazz Poll. Reynolds has performed with notable jazz artists Brian Blade and Aaron Goldberg, and can also be seen on NBC performing in the house band for The Bonnie Hunt Show.
