Ska was reborn in the early 90s and the Slackers were one of the bands that helped revive the genre. Formed in 1991, the Slackers experimented with a mixture of ska, reggae, soul, swing, garage rock and jazz and garnered a vast following in their Brooklyn backyard. Their debut album, appropriately titled Better Late than Never, was released in 1996 and helped them get signed to notable punk label Hellcat Records.
By the late 90s ska was fading yet again but that has not slowed down the Slackers, who have yet to pack up their horns and walk into the sunset. The band has released 11 albums, nearly one a year since their first, and is currently touring in support of their latest, Self Medication.
The Slackers are known for their high-energy, expertly honed live shows, so if you’re a fan, or even if your not, you absolutely do not want to miss their upcoming concert at Jack Rabbits. The band will perform on December 7th with local groove-masters Greenhouse Lounge. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. For more info, call 398-7496.
