River City Band’s Yuletide Swing

Jacksonville has a rich musical history but did you know it is also home to the state of Florida’s official band? The St. John’s River City Band was bestowed that honor way back in 1990 but the group holds onto the title thanks to their exceptional talent and dedication to music education.
According to their official website “the mission of the St. Johns River City Band is to keep jazz and other American music alive through performance and education.” The band has done just that at home and around the country, with shows at Carnegie Hall, Disney World’s EPCOT Center, Ruth Eckerd Hall and, of course, our very own Metropolitan Park. In addition to their performances, the band gives back by giving middle and high school aged musicians a chance to play in the St. Johns River City Youth Band, a program that has introduced thousands upon thousands of kids to a wide variety of musical styles.
The River City Band will play Art Walk this month in a program called “Yuletide Swing.” The concert will be held at the Main Library from 6:30 pm to 7:45 pm and is completely free. For more information on the River City Band, their concerts and their cause, visit rivercityband.com or call 390-1999.
