Their new work is at Monya Rowe Gallery, and it’s smart, beautiful and surprising. At first pass, Ferguson’s creations seem like very satisfying geometric abstractions; however, upon closer inspection, her manipulation of the materials is revealed as a startling cousin to trompe l’oeil. She trowels pieces of MDF with plaster in a manner that recalls handmade papers, then silkscreens her architecturally informed drawings onto a prepared surface. Reid works with precision, too, but hers seems born of secret and internal machinations; emanating from obscure but celebratory rites.
Mount of Venus is on display through Dec. 22, Monya Rowe Gallery, St. Augustine, monyarowegallery.com.
