Where the Streets Have Two Names

City planners should put on their thinking cap hats

I've always wondered who came up with the names of streets in Jacksonville.

I'm guessing the city planner who dreamt up Peter Pan Place and Snow White Drive on the Westside was a fan of fairy tales, while an Ivy Leaguer must have named Harvard, Princeton and Yale avenues in Ortega.

These thoroughfares, I assume, were named by the Department of Redundancy Department:

This one, however, defies explanation. Even for the City of Jacksonville.

The fairy tale names on the westside came from the developer. Not easy sometimes to think up names for new streets.

The irritating and inconvenient names are the vanity ones with more than one word such as A. Phillip Randolph Boulevard. What a mouthful and no one really knows where it is. The old name, Florida Avenue, makes a lot more sense. Tuesday, February 19|Report this

Don't forget Highway Avenue! It crosses Lane Avenue, so that's a double double.

My favorite street sign in Jacksonville is for Memory Lane. According to that sign, Memory Lane is a dead end. Tuesday, February 19|Report this

My ex-girlfriend from high school grew up off of Noroad. Actually, she lived off a dirt road off of Noroad. I always thought it was funny and creative. It's better than all of the Forsyths, Mains, and roads named after every dead president and vice-president that every city has. I've always wanted to see a set of roads named after characters from TV shows, like Sam Malone Street, Cliff Huxtable Drive, Margaret Houlihan Lane, and Charles Arcola Circle.
