Freedom Boat Club and MarineMax are joining forces to provide a special training event for boaters on June 8, National Marina Day.

“Taking the Helm” will be taught by US Coast Guard certified Captains and offer training in two specific areas: how to dock in close quarters and proper anchoring skills. This special event offers an opportunity for novice boaters, even first-timers, to test the waters and learn critical skills for a nominal fee.

While most boaters are comfortable taking the helm in open water and operating under normal conditions, it can be intimidating to dock a boat in tight spaces or set an anchor in a crowded area. “Taking the Helm” is designed to help boaters of all levels learn new skills as well as gain confidence.

Each session lasts an hour and has a $10 registration fee, which will be donated to charity.
The training will be offered at two sites: Camache Cove Marina in St. Augustine and Julington Creek Marina in Jacksonville. Pre-registering guarantees a
spot. Walk-ups will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. “We wanted to give people a chance to take the helm, and drive a boat, so they could see how easy it can be. We want to encourage first time boaters to attend”, said Lisa Almeida, owner of Freedom Boat Club.
