On Sept. 21, 2013, Jacksonville will host the inaugural Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival at the Jacksonville Landing on the St. John’s River in downtown Jacksonville. The Jacksonville Landing is a spectacular, spectator-friendly venue, with an array of restaurants and shops.

Dragon Boating is the fastest growing water sport in the world, with teams racing in more than 80 countries. Jacksonville will add their festival to a host of dragon boat festivals held throughout the world, bringing people together for a day of racing, fellowship, team-building, and fun. Organized by Pan Am Dragon Boat Association, In the Pink, and Charlene Shirk Productions, the Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival hopes to host 50 teams with over 1000 athletes participating and thousands of visitors.

What Happens at a Dragon Boat Festival?

There is something for everyone! Companies, organizations, friends, breast cancer survivors, and recreational groups form teams of 21 people (20 paddlers and 1 drummer), put on their crazy team shirts and costumes, and paddle to win medals and division cups…not to mention BRAGGING RIGHTS!

The inaugural Fidelity Investments Jacksonville Dragon Boat Festival will host 50 local and out-of-town teams who will participate in 400m heats throughout the day. Each team will race three times as they vie for the gold, silver or bronze medals in their division. There are also prizes for the best dressed drummer, most spirited team, and most captivating tent!

The week prior to the event, Pan Am Dragon Boats will provide practice for each team so that everyone has a little experience learning to paddle in sync before competing on race day. If a team really wants to get a competitive edge, for a small fee ($100), they can schedule additional practices with the coaches of our two local teams, the Saltwater Slayers and the Mammoglams.

How simple is that? The festival is full of excitement, with music, performers, and tons of fun for all ages! What are you waiting for? GET BIT BY THE DRAGON!!!

Cost: Corporate Teams $1800

Community & Local Competitive Teams $900

Out of Town Competitive Clubs (100+miles from Jacksonville) Non-Profit, and Breast Cancer Teams $600
