CJS's "Summer Swingin' In Savannah!" presents the "Kelly/Scott Quartet"
Featuring: Vocalist Lisa Kelly, Trumpeter JB Scott,
Pianist-bassist Jeff Phillips & Drummer Clyde Connor.
A 5-time Downbeat Magazine award winning vocalist and composer, and "2013 Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame" inductee, Lisa Kelly is considered by many to be one of the best big band singers in the country but is equally at home in an intimate small group setting. Trumpeter JB Scott is an associate professor of music at the University of North Florida, directing the acclaimed UNF Jazz Ensemble I and teaching jazz trumpet & other music related courses. His hard swinging and lyrical lines carry on the tradition of Louis Armstrong, Ruby Braff, Freddie Hubbard, Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie and Arturo Sandoval. His broad versatility of style comes from years of experience performing in big bands and Miami Latin bands, touring with the Barnum & Bailey Circus, to three years fronting the world
famous Dukes of Dixieland.
Ms. Kelly’s singing style reflects influences from the classic jazz vocals of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Carmen McCrae to the modern stylists Diana Krall and Dianne Reeves. She is well known for her solid sense of swing feel, impeccable phrasing, a horn-like approach to scatting and her rich, intimate vocal timbre. Scott and Kelly have appeared on numerous international jazz festivals in Europe & the U.S, including the Montreux JF, North Sea JF, Clearwater JF, Monterey JF, and the Savannah JF, THey have performed with such legendary jazz notables as Bunky Green, Arturo Sandoval, Tim Hagan, Bill Allred, Lynne Arriale, Danny Gottlieb, Slide Hampton, Ed Calle, Carmen Bradford, Dave Steinmeyer, and Bob Draga. They have released 5 CD recordings and have appeared on many recordings with other artists. Both have been profiled in the book, "The New Face of Jazz."
They will be joined by two outstanding rhythm section players, Jeff Phillips (Orlando) on piano & bass, and Clyde Connor on drums. Jeff Phillips is highly recognized for his expansive repertoire, Oscar Peterson/Art Tatum/ Bill Evans influences and incredible ability to play piano, bass pedals and guitar in a solid, tasteful, authentic swing pocket, often heard with vocalist Lisa Kelly, Bill Allred's Classic Jazz and the Midiri Bros. Without exception, Clyde Connor is one of the most in demand small group to big band drummers in the region. Formally with the legendary Navy Commodores Big Band, Clyde has been featured on numerous Warner Bros to current artists recordings, is the drummer with the St. Johns River City Big Band and a top call for many other high level groups.
The Quartet will feature music that is energetic, sensitive, and fun, songs from the Great American Songbook to traditional
songs of the trumpet masters, with a forte in swing!
